olympics in memory.

the olympics has been a very memorable and special event in my life.

1996: was 9 years old, watching the atlanta olympics at tapah with gong gong (granddad). he was very excited about the track and field events which got me curious as to what the fuss was about. he also told me that the olympics is an event which happens only every 4 years, the most prestigious sporting event ever.

2000: was 13 years old. in form 1. the olympics in 2000 was hosted by aussie. it was pretty interesting being allowed to watch the track and field events from school during 'Jasmani'.

2004: was 17 years old in form 5. senior year. preparations for SPM was underway and there wasnt much time to observe the events in athens. nevertheless, the school still allowed us to catch up to events during 'PE' (Jasmani)

2008: now 21 years old, final year in university in good ol' ozzie. this time the olympics will be held in beijing. although i am slightly dissapointed with the preparations so far, which failed to address the issue of pollution, i will still be watching it, especially the track and field events. not placing any high hopes on records being broken though, but we shall see.

casting such a thin shadow

Speak up
My ears are growing weary
I’ll sing this song to the end
And watch the waves crash over me

Not too much to overcome with enough time to turn it all around
In a picture perfect scenery I’ve become a stick figure illustration

My eyes roll back and focus on what’s ahead
I can still stand if you lend the hand to brace me

I’ll take this on my own

Lord i need Your strength. i need your hand to brace and comfort me in times of trial. there is nothing i yearn more than to bathe in the glory of Your presence. Glory be to You, Lord Saviour.

Amen.

GM

someone asked me yesterday what my take was on GM food, or more elaborately Genetically Modified Food. In laymen terms, these are foods that have had their genetic structure altered or modified to produce certain desirable qualities such as increased resistance to rotting, increased pest resistance, and also to provide certain benefits such as increased vitamin content and many more. This field has become increasingly popular over the years as more research is put into it.

In my opinion, a person can look at it in 2 perspectives. U need not necessarily choose a stand, but it is important to understand the implications that come with both standpoints.

The 1st is the scientific, or rather practical view of things. With the recent global food shortage in certain regions around the world, escalating food prices have driven many families to a dead end. War zones, which have limited food supply needs an efficient food transportation system to feed armies. GM food, which are modified to be tougher and longer lasting, also providing certain perks have been seen as a viable solution. With these, foods can be transported to deeper regions in the world either as supplies or as aid. Thus far, with no reported substantial claims about negative effects of the consumption of GM food, the research in this field is seen as a win-win situation for all. From a practical point of view anyway.

The other way which u could look at it is from the ethical point of view. GM foods have been tempered with genetically, with genes studied and modified to produce desirable qualities. Creationists around the world have been opposing research into this field due to the very nature of it being against the laws of nature. (pun intended) Furthermore, there has also been questionable emphasis placed on the safety of the products produced, with not much data gathered on the effects of long-term consumption.

in my opinion, both sides of the argument are very plausible. This could go either way and is still generating controversies as i write.

Really gets u thinking, topics such as this euthanasia, cloning etc.

just change it

riding on the wave of a certain upcoming election that will be rather interesting to observe, i am glad to see the frustration of malaysians with the current ruling coalition. after so many years of mismanagement, our people have been surprisingly naive and ignorant on the subject of politics. most think it's irrelevant and some think they dont make a difference.

it is because of this ignorance that makes things so much more difficult to change. a country 50 years of age which is still in its infancy in politics, there is much to fix about the current election system, boiling down to the electorates and how ingeniously divided they are to the benefit of the ruling coalition. gerrymandering. it shakes the very core of democracy, one person one vote.

it is of no wonder that we are still stuck being a 3rd world country despite being one of the richest countries in SEA in regards to natural resources and also one of the most fortunate, geographically speaking.

with corruption, crime, inflation and protests on the rise - university rankings, open-mindedness, and the command of english on the slide, perhaps we should "just change it"
